Media
Additional resources of an advertisement, like images, videos and documents, are called media.
Transfer methods
Depending on the preferences of the site, these files can be transferred in a couple of ways:
- As files
DV transmits the files (e.g. the images of a vehicle) together with the advertisement data itself. The way these files are transmitted depends on the chosen type of data transfer. For bulk transfers, the files are included in the batch. To save space, only new or changed files will be included.
Even if media is transmitted as files, it is recommended to include references to the files in the advertisement data to allow for the removal of media.
- As references (URLs)
When transmitting the files as references, DV sends a list of URL's. The site can download the media using those URL's. It is important to note that this mechanism is only intended for transmitting files from DV to the site and not for hosting the media for the site. The site should download these files as soon as possible and keep a local copy.
DV guarantees a media file has not been changed as long as the URL stays the same. This allows for sites to skip downloading unnecessary media files.
Images
Sites should disclose their image requirements and recommendations to Hexon. These can be:
- The accepted file formats (JPG, PNG, webp, ...);
- The minimum number of images per advertisement;
- The maximum number of images per advertisement;
- The minimum height and/or width of an image;
- The maximum height and/or width of an image;
- Specific image resolution requirements (e.g. only 640x480);
- The accepted image aspect ratios (e.g. only 4:3);
- The optimum resolution of an image;
- The minimum file size of an image;
- The maximum file size of an image;
- If automatically added overlays are accepted
DV uses all these criteria to determine the best image format and dimensions for each image.
Videos
DV does not have a copy of the video files attached to an object. DV only has references to video files hosted on external platforms like YouTube and Vimeo. Therefore a couple of exceptions apply:
- DV cannot send videos as files, only as references (for example as a link to a YouTube video);
- The requirement to download the referenced files is not applicable for videos;
- DV cannot resize or otherwise modify video files;
- DV cannot convert videos from one platform to another;
- DV cannot ensure the referenced videos continue to exist during the lifetime of an advertisement
